J. H. Meyer carried this gun in 1856 while guarding the Kansas border from Atchison to Lawrence, while a member of the Kansas territorial pro-slavery militia organized for the purpose of keeping Jim Lane out of the territory. The musket is probably a type 1 issued by the Springfield Armory from 1855-1859 and it has interchangeable parts.
