This stereograph shows a U. S. Express Overland stage with African-American soldiers on guard against attack. Gardner identified the stage as starting for Denver, Colorado, from Hays City, Kansas. The image was taken from Alexander Gardner's series, "Across the Continent on the Union Pacific Railway, Eastern Division." The survey expedition was split into two parties. Gardner was part of the northern party that photographed the 35th parallel. While Dr. William Bell was part of the southern party that photographed through New Mexico and west along the 32nd parallel. There is a possibility that Dr. William Bell may have taken this photograph.
