The Kansas adjutant general at Parsons sends a telegram to Governor John Martin of Topeka asking the governor for permission to furnish the mayor of Parsons with one hundred guns to preserve peace in the city. A strike of railroad workers on the Missouri Pacific Railroad at Parsons led company and city officials to ask the governor to arm citizens and for call out the militia.

In Topeka, the Kansas Freedmen's Aid Association had appealed to other counties, asking them to form local aid societies to assist refugees in their respective areas. Lawrence citizens held a meeting in Fraser Hall to discuss the Exodus; the attendees recognized the legitimacy of the Exodus and were willing to provide aid and support for the emigrants.

These three black and white photographs show scenes from Alonzo B. Webster's funeral in Dodge City, Kansas. The former mayor of Dodge City (1881-1883) died on April 12, 1887, at the home of his niece Mrs. M. W. Sutton. He was buried in the Prairie Grove Cemetery north of town.

C. E. Blood wrote from Manhattan, Kansas Territory, to Hiram Hill in Massachusetts. Blood informed Hill of an upcoming meeting of the Manhattan Town Association, and told him that he should send a power of attorney to a local citizen to act as his representative. Blood also said that he had not received money for the city tax he had previously requested, and warned Hill that the city authorities would sell his lots if they were not paid.

Citizens of Dodge City to Governor George W. Glick

Twelve citizens of Dodge City, Kansas, write Governor George W. Glick, of Topeka, protesting the forcible removal of Luke Short from Dodge City. The letter recounts the events which led to Mr. Short's removal and testifies regarding his character. The events recounted occurred between April 26 and May 1, 1883. The letter refers to Short's employment of women singers at his Long Branch Saloon and their subsequent arrest, a shooting between Short and Louis Hartman (special policeman), the arrest of Short and Hartman, the intimidation of Short's attorneys, and the Mayor's (L. E. Deger) insistence that Short (and others) be escorted out of the city. An appended newspaper article recounts events occurring between May 1 and May 10, 1883, specifically the attempted return of two men formerly jailed with Short. Dodge City Times editor, Nick Klaine, wrote the article and was an enthusiastic supporter of Deger's recently elected reform party. The arrest of Short's women employees is often credited as beginning the "Dodge City War," a bloodless conflict between competing political-business factions.

Cyrus K. Holliday wrote from the Wyandotte Convention to his wife, Mary Holliday, in Meadville, Pennsylvania. His efforts to ensure that Topeka would be the capital of Kansas Territory had set back his personal political career (territorially and nationally, that is; he had recently been elected mayor of Topeka). Cyrus anxiously awaited the return of Mary and their children, Lillie and newborn Charles.

He migrated to the Kansas territory in 1854 as a member of the New England Emigrant Aid Company and settled in Leavenworth, Kansas; where he established a long and successfully career as a newspaper editor and publisher. Anthony owned and operated the Leavenworth Conservative, the Bulletin, and later, in 1871, the Leavenworth Times. With the outbreak of the Civil War he left the newspaper business to enlist in the Union army as a lieutenant colonel of the First Kansas Cavalry, later reassigned as the Seventh Kansas Regiment. Anthony was involved in several skirmishes and battles during the Civil War but led troops to victory at the Battle of the Little Blue. In 1862, his military career was marked with controversy for not following orders issued under General Robert Mitchell's command. On September 3, 1862, he resigned from his post and returned to Leavenworth, Kansas. Anthony became actively involved in the community serving several terms on the city council and two terms as mayor of Leavenworth. He was also elected, in 1868, President of the Republican State Convention and served as President of the Kansas Historical Society from 1885 to 1886. For nearly a century Anthony was associated with the issues and concerns of Leavenworth, Kansas. On November 12, 1904, he passed away at the age of eighty in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Black leather doctor's bag with brass hardware. Carried by Dr. George Campbell McKnight (1866-1942) of Hiawatha, Kansas. After graduating from Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1892, he returned to Hiawatha and entered into a surgical and medical practice. In addition to practicing medicine, McKnight also served as Mayor of Hiawatha from 1914 to 1920. The bag was made by Hettinger Brothers Manufacturing Company of Kansas City, Missouri.

The mayor of Lincoln Center (Lincoln County), F. J. Aufdemberge, writes Governor Harry Woodring of Topeka, Kansas, with a plan to help reduce the high number of unemployed men in the state. Mr. Aufdemberge suggests that married women whose husbands are employed should be required to resign and let unemployed men have those jobs, especially in the case of women teachers employed in high schools. Between 1930 and 1933, Kansas experienced a dramatic rise in unemployment. Woodring's Governor's Committee on Unemployment favored work programs at the local level rather than cash relief programs funded by tax increases. By July 1932, Woodring appealed to the federal government for help and established the Kansas Federal Relief Committee to administer the federal programs. See Governor Harry Woodring to F. J. In this letter, the local authorities of Labette County, Kansas, plead with Kansas governor John Martin for militia support to preserve order in Parsons during the railroad strike of 1886. In February 1885, railroad shop workers walked off the job because of a cut in pay and reduced hours of work. Governor Martin was able to negotiate a settlement to the strike but problems continued throughout Kansas, Missouri, and Texas.
