Walstead wrote to announce and confirm a vacancy in the office of coroner due to the death of the former coroner, H. W. Meurcke. Barber County was organized on April 14, 1874. The county was named for Thomas Barber, a freestater from Ohio who was killed on the road between Bloomington and Lawrence during the Wakarusa War in 1855 by proslavery men.

Cowley County was organized on February 28, 1870 and named for First Lieutenant Matthew Cowley, C. I, Ninth Kansas Cavalry, who was killed at Little Rock, Arkansas, in August, 1864.

Decatur county was founded on December 11, 1879 and named for Commodore Stephen Decatur, of War of 1812 fame.

This later, dated January 13, 1887, is from the coroner of Dickinson County, Kansas, John R. Quinn, regarding his resignation to Kansas Governor John Martin. He wrote to give his resignation saying that he would stay until his successor is appointed and qualified. He also recommended a successor, George Hoisington, with other signed names recommending Hoisington. Dickinson county was organized on February 20, 1857 and named for Senator Daniel S. Dickinson of New York, supporter of Kansas' quest for territorial status.

A petition from citizens of Ellsworth County request Kansas Governor Harvey appoint C. B. Whitney as Sheriff. A letter from George Geiger informs the Governor that there is a petition to have him appointed as Probate Judge but that he does not desire the position. A petition to have John H. Edwards appointed as Probate Judge of Ellsworth County. A letter from M. W. Henry, County Clerk, notifies the Governor there are vacancies in the Office of Sheriff and Coroner for Ellsworth County. In Henry's letter, he states the Board of County Commissioners recommends C. B. Whitney as Sheriff and Hugh Tulity for Coroner. Additional documents are related to vacancies in Ellsworth, Kansas.
