Carlin for governor campaign brochure

This brochure is from John Carlin's first gubernatorial campaign, in 1978, against Governor Robert Bennett. The brochure includes a brief biographical sketch of Carlin, quotations that Kansas government needs to be more responsive to citizens, and statements claiming that his opponent, has raised property taxes too much. Carlin went on to defeat Governor Bennet in the November general election.

Governor Robert F. Bennett of Topeka, Kansas works on a first draft of his annual address to the Kansas Legislature. This excerpt of his draft concerns state population trends. Governor Bennett claims that in 1975-1976 more people moved to Kansas than left it, reversing a consistent trend of out-migration since 1900. The Governor's first draft includes seven paragraphs on the subject of population while the finished address includes only four sentences.

Governor Robert Frederick Bennett

This black and white photograph shows Robert Frederick Bennett, (1927-2000). He was first elected to public office, in 1955, as a council member for the City of Prairie Village and later the mayor of the city from 1957 to 1965. Bennett successfully ran on the Republican ticket for a seat in the Kansas Senate, (1965 to 1974). He later served as president of the senate from, (1973 to 1974). In 1974, he was elected the thirty-ninth Governor of Kansas, (1975-1979). Bennett is remembered for being an eloquent speaker. He passed away on October 9, 2000 at the age of seventy-three.

This is a photograph showing Kansas Governor Robert Frederick Bennett seated in the Senate president's chair. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 23, 1927. Bennett practiced law in Johnson County, Kansas, and held several local offices before winning election to the state senate in 1964. He was president of the Senate when he won the Republican Party's 1974 gubernatorial nomination and the subsequent general election. This was the first election in which candidates for Kansas governor and lieutenant governor ran as a team and were elected to a four-year term rather than the traditional two-year terms. Bennett was an unsuccessful candidate for a second term in 1978. Afterwards Bennett returned to his Johnson County law firm and home where he died on October 9, 2000.

On July 15, 1975, Rogers was nominated by President Gerald Ford to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Kansas. The Topeka Daily Capital printed an early projection of the Kansas governor's race between Republican incumbent Robert Bennett and Democratic hopeful John Carlin, who was Speaker of the Kansas House of Representatives. As this issue shows, the paper called the race for Bennett initially and ran headlines and articles declaring Bennett the winner. John Carlin actually won the election becoming the state's fortieth governor.
