Edna Heim to Miss Clarice Snoddy

Tenant farmers Bill and Edna Heim of Kensington, Kansas, wrote to the farm owner, Clarice Snoddy of Topeka, regarding a hail storm that destroyed most of their crop. The letter discusses the insurance claim to be filed for the damage and the tenants' feelings, economic condition, and related problems. The letter illustrates the considerable vulnerability of farming to unfavorable environmental and economic conditions. Farms on the plains had been ravaged by drought and wind in what is commonly known as the Dust Bowl.

This is a photograph showing a couple watching a late afternoon rainstorm from inside the Depot Cafe at 110 North 7th Street in Marysville, Kansas. The cafe, located less than a block south of the train depot, was built on the site of the earlier Dad's Beanery.

Thomas Holmquist describes a 2007 flood on his farm in Saline County, Kansas, near Smolan. A historian and educator, Holmquist is a lifelong resident of the Smoky Valley. He has written several books including Bluestem (c2000) and Pioneer Cross : Swedish Settlements along the Smoky Hill Bluffs (c1994).

Pastel painting entitled Thunder Over the Flint Hills. The artist, Kimberly Casebeer, grew up in rural Southeast Kansas and studied art at Kansas State University until 1992. She later established a studio in Lenexa, Kansas. Casebeer is a plein-air painter specializing in Kansas landscapes. Her works have been shown at the Wichita Center for the Arts, the Birger Sandzen Museum in Lindsborg, and the Mulvane Art Museum in Topeka.
