The subdivisions are located west of Gage Boulevard, south of the Kansas River, east of Fairlawn Road, and north of Sixth Avenue. This photograph was taken prior to the construction of Interstate I-70.

An aerial view of land located west of Gage Boulevard, south of the Kansas River, and north of 6th Avenue. The area later became West Hills and Prospect Hills residential subdivisions. In 1931, several people formed the Prospect Hills Golf Association. They hired Mr. Daghlerch, a Kansas City architect, to lay out the course (black lines on the photograph show the location). It continued for six years and on January 27, 1937, a portion of the land was sold to Mrs. Theo Landon. On May 9, 1938, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Landon purchased the remaining part of Prospect Hills and hired Neiswanger Investment Company to market the subdivision.

Recognizable sites include: the Kansas River; Topeka Water Department treatment plant; Union Pacific Railroad tracks and bridge; Topeka State Hospital grounds; Ward-Mead home; Topeka Avenue bridge; Kansas Avenue bridge; business buildings north of Fourth Street; Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway shops, tracks and bridge; and Auburndale, Potwin, East Topeka and Oakland residential areas.

Richland, Kansas

Richland, Kansas
Date: Between 1950s and 1960s
This aerial view shows Richland, Kansas. The town was founded, 1854, in the Monmouth Township along the Wakarusa River in Shawnee County. In the late 1960's and early 1970's, Richland was abandoned when the Army Corps of Engineers acquired land in the area for the flood plain of Clinton Lake in nearby Douglas County. Today, the only visible reminders of the town is broken pavement which once covered the town's streets.

An aerial view of the Topeka Municipal Airport, Topeka, Kansas, showing the runways and buildings. With funds and labor from the Works Progress Administration, the airport constructed three asphalted runways, installed tile drains along the runways to carry away surface and subsoil water, and a large stone hangar.
