This large brochure contains a full map on one side of Kansas, Colorado, and portions of surrounding states including the Black Hills of South Dakota. The reverse side has a myriad of information encouraging immigration to Kansas with the purchase of Kansas Pacific Railway lands; freighting between the Missouri River and Denver; $45.00 round trip tickets for tourists between Kansas City and Denver; enjoying the Switzerland of America and its many resorts; the railway line with Pullman sleepers, steel tracks and Westinghouse brakes; gold and silver mining in the San Juan and Black Hill regions; health resorts with pure air for weak lungs, sulfur springs, iron springs and hot springs; and a time table for the Kansas Pacific Railway. All of this was meant to promote travel on the Kansas Pacific Railway. NOTE: Because of the design of the brochure, pages 2 and 3 are duplicates but the right side up of the text is in the lower half of each image.

A glimpse of the Southwest; New Mexico, the Santa Fe Route

This brochure advertises the "Fertile Rio Grande Valley" of New Mexico. Rich in gold, silver, copper, lead, iron and coal along with forests, farms, orchards, vineyards, meadows and flocks and herds. The brochure describes the history of territory and the State of New Mexico; describes the land; tells of the natural resources that are being mined; and, of the agricultural crops being raised. The climate, the towns and educational opportunities are described. Two maps show the route of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Rail Road System in the United States and Mexico; and, the whole State of New Mexico.

A Kansas Pacific Railway map of Kansas and Colorado

This map by the Kansas Pacific Railway Company features their "Golden Belt Route" from Kansas City to the "rich silver discoveries in Colorado." It advertises the "shortest and quickest, therefore the cheapest, route to Colorado." The map includes all of the counties of Kansas and eastern Colorado and most of the cities, towns and communities.

A large poster distributed by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad to encourage land settlement in the Pottawattomie Reserve in eastern Kansas. Included on the poster is a full page map of the Pottawattomie Reserve on one side and four pictures of the land on the other. The poster/brochure was encouraging farming and settlement in this area because of ready access via the railroad to all markets east of Topeka. Included are brief descriptions of Topeka, Wamego, St. Mary's, Alma and other small towns. Prices and ways to purchase the land are detailed.

This brochure, published by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company, promotes travelers to stay at the Fred Harvey Alvarado Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The booklet describes the luxurious accommodations and the Spanish Mission décor that guests will experience during their stay. There are also photographs throughout the pamphlet that capture the beauty of the facility. The California Mission style hotel designed by architect Charles F. Whittlesey, was built in 1902, and later razed in 1970.

On the backside of the brochure, a time table is printed for the Grand Canyon line that runs to the National Park in Arizona.

Avery, governor, Republican

A 1966 campaign brochure that promotes the re-election of Republican Governor William Avery. Avery stands behind the slogan "he did what had to be done... and he did it well". He reassures voters that during his administration he acted in a sane sensible manner when it came to fiscal policies and programs in contrast to the reckless behavior of the Federal Government during President Lyndon B. Johnson's administration. Democratic candidate Robert Docking defeated Avery in the November general election.

Bill Graves Governor of Kansas, Governor '98

This political brochure promotes Governor Bill Graves as the Republican candidate for the August 4, 1998 gubernatorial primary. The brochure features images, a brief biographical sketch and major accomplishments from his first administration. Graves also reminds voters to compare his political record to that of his challenger. Graves defeated David Miller, former Chairman of the Kansas Republican Party.

The brochure also has a map of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico showing the route of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad and its various connections.

California Limited

This brochure published by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company is promoting travelers to take the passenger train the "California Limited." The publication goes on to describe the journeys and the sights travelers will experience aboard the "California Limited." There are also illustrations throughout the pamphlet that capture the luxuries of its eight cars. At the back of the brochure a schedule is provided for the eastbound and westbound connecting trains and technical drawings illustrating the various cars that make up the "California Limited."

Campaign brochure for Congressman Keith Sebelius

This is a campaign brochure for Kansas First District Congressman Keith Sebelius. The brochure was mailed to Jack and Hazel Carlin, Smolan, Kansas. The son of the local dentist, Keith G. Sebelius was born in Almena, Norton County, Kansas, on September 10, 1916, and attended Almena public schools. He graduated from Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1939 and the George Washington University Law School in 1942. Sebelius practiced law in Kansas and the District of Columbia and served in the military during World War II and the Korean conflict. He was city councilman, mayor, and city attorney of Almena, Norton County attorney, mayor of Norton, and a state senator (appointed in 1962 and elected in 1964). In 1968 he was elected to the U.S. Congress (served, January 3, 1969-January 3, 1981). After representing the people of Kansas's "Big First" District for a dozen years, Congressman Sebelius chose not to seek reelection in 1980 and returned to his law practice in Norton, where he died on September 5, 1982.

This is an election brochure distributed by John William Carlin during his campaign for State Representative, 73rd District. It was sent to voters in Ellsworth County, rural Saline County and Precinct 1 in Salina. Carlin ran for a seat in the Kansas House of Representatives in 1970, was reelected to four terms and served as Speaker of the Kansas House from 1977 to 1979. In 1979, he was elected governor of Kansas and served two terms.

This is a brochure from Governor John Carlin's second gubernatorial campaign in 1982 against Sam Hardage. Governor Carlin highlights the accomplishments of his first administration including: limiting growth in the size of government, lowering taxes, improving public safety, and enhancing economic development. He also advocates for the enactment of a severance tax on gas and oil producers as a way to promote tax fairness in the state. Governor Carlin defeated Sam Hardage in the 1982 election and served a second term as governor.

This brochure is from John Carlin's first gubernatorial campaign, in 1978, against Governor Robert Bennett. The brochure includes a brief biographical sketch of Carlin, quotations that Kansas government needs to be more responsive to citizens, and statements claiming that his opponent, has raised property taxes too much. Carlin went on to defeat Governor Bennet in the November general election.

Central Branch Union Pacific Railroad offers land from Atchison to Kirwin and Bull City

This brochure encourages the purchase of land twenty miles either side of the Central Branch Union Pacific Railroad. The Central Branch Union Pacific Railroad lies primarily from Atchison to Concordia and north. There is a full map of the area on the reverse side of the brochure. Also included are brief descriptions of Marshall, Brown, Jackson, Riley, Pottawatomie and Nemaha counties. There is a drawing of the Blue Rapids Woolen Mills and power plant.

Charles M. Sheldon memorials

Charles M. Sheldon (1857-1946) served as a minister of the Central Congregational Church in Topeka, Kansas from 1889 to 1920. He was also an author of the international best seller, In His Steps, which was published in 1897. A series of memorials, presented here, comprises part of the Charles Monroe Sheldon/Central Congregational Church Collection. A complete description of the entire collection is available through a link below. This series includes letters, a notebook, published articles, and assorted items surrounding Sheldon's death and memorials in his honor. The letters are to and from individuals and members or groups associated with Sheldon's study, the Altruist Club of Central Congregational Church organized by Sheldon, and exhibits related to Sheldon after his death. Correspondents include Carl K. Linge, Elsei Hobson, Hugh F. McKean, Charles W. Helsley, Howard S. Searle, Hermione Adams, Brewster Place, Catharine Brandenburg, Andrew K. Craig, John Goodin, Emma Crabb, Walter Earl Glover Architect, Bailey-Reynolds Chandelier Company, D. O. Coe Seed & Grain Company, Pilgrim Congregational Church in California, and First (Park) Congregational Church. Emma Crabb was in charge of the Sheldon Collection at the Central Congregational Church. The publication, Congregational KANSAS, published in 1946, provides his picture on the cover page and an article titled "Dr. Charles Monroe Sheldon, Congregational Minister." The topics of other publications, such as the Congressional Record of 1946, and PROGRESS, also published in 1946, include Sheldon's lifelong activities as a pastor and author.
