A photograph of a burned tractor near the capitol in Washington, D.C. Vernon Deines and others from Kansas transported the tractor to Washington and set it on fire as part of the American Agriculture Movement protesting unfair crop prices. On February 5, 1979, thousands of farmers and tractors converged on the city. Before the day was out, 19 farmers had been arrested, 17 tractors impounded, and police had penned the farmers into an involuntary prison camp on the Washington Mall.

This catalog was published by Avery Manufacturing Company advertising their engines, threshers, self feeders, pneumatic straw stackers, water tanks, and farm machinery. All of the pages of the catalog have illustrations and text about the equipment being advertised. There is an index on page 64 and the front and back covers are in color. The company was located in Peoria, Illinois, but it is assumed the catalog was distributed to Kansas farmers.

These photographs are part of the Kansas State Historical Society's online exhibit, "Wheat People: Celebrating Kansas Harvest." This exhibit focuses on the people who have built Kansas's agricultural reputation. In June 1998, the KSHS staff followed harvesters from the Oklahoma border to far northwestern Kansas. They photographed and interviewed families from the top twenty wheat-producing counties in Kansas. The photographs featured here are of the Carrico Implement Company in Beloit, Kansas. They sold, primarily, John Deere and New Holland machinery.
