This is a letter from E.H. Claar and J.L Trowbridge, Decatur County, Kansas, to an unknown recipient. In the letter, the authors tell of camping in the outdoors, several possible Indian scares, the railroad coming through New Kiowa, and the condition of the crops. The letter is on letterhead for the Kiowa Town Company of Kiowa, Barber County, Kansas. There is printed information about New Kiowa on the back of the letter. NOTE: It is not clear why this item was associated with Decatur County for collection storage purposes.

Jim Bertoglio video interview on experiences in World War II (transcript)

Jim Bertoglio was drafted into the Army (Air Force) in 1943 and served until 1945 in the 94th Fighter Squadron as a photographer. Interviewed by David Fasgold on Oct 11, 2006, Bertoglio talked about military experiences in the Second World War. Beroglio was born in Garden city, Kansas, in January 1925. His family moved to Kiowa, Kansas, in 1931 and later to Medicine Lodge. For his senior year, he attended Covina Union High School in California, living with an aunt. During the summer before his senior year, he studied photography at the Art Center School of Los Angeles. After training at Fort Leavenworth and Lincoln Air Force Base in Lincoln, Nebraska, he studied at the Command Photo School at Lowery Air Force Base. He was discharged December 1, 1945. He attended the University of Colorado on the G. I. Bill but did not graduate. He eventually returned to Medicine Lodge, Kansas. The interview describes numerous flights and other events while he was stationed in Italy. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the nine community institutions that received these grants. The transcript from the interview is presented here; the original video copy of the interview is available through the Greater Barber County Historical Action Assn and through the Kansas State Historical Society.
