This panoramic view shows the west side of the 600 and 700 blocks of South Kansas Avenue, Topeka, Kansas. Businesses visible in the photograph are: Palace Clothing Company, Central National Bank, F. W. Woolworth Company 5-10 and 15 Cent Store, Hall Printing and Stationery, and S.S. Kresge Company. The buildings and light poles are decorated for Christmas and there are automobiles parked on the street.

Christmas card from Amelia Earhart and George Putnam. Printed in black on off-white colored paper. The donor's family knew Earhart and Putnam, and the couple stayed with the family when they visited the British Isles. Putnam and Earhart met in 1928 when the publisher contacted the aviatrix to ask her to become the first woman to fly across the Atlantic as a passenger. They were married in 1931. Earhart disappeared over the Pacific during an attempted around-the-world flight on July 2, 1937.

This photograph is provided through a pilot project to host unique cultural heritage materials from local libraries on Kansas Memory and was accomplished by mutual agreement between the Northeast Kansas Library System, the Rossville Community Library, and the Kansas Historical Society.

Joan Ledeboer arrived just in time for Christmas, on December 3,1963, in Belvue, Kansas. Her aunt and uncle, Mary and David Prickett, bought this infant's Santa Claus ensemble for Joan's first holiday. Mary had purchased it from J.C. Penney, a major retailer that issued its first catalog that very same year.

Pen and ink cartoon drawing by Albert T. Reid. Santa Claus is startled by phonographic "Talking Machine" playing a prerecorded Christmas wish list from a young boy. The cartoon is captioned in pencil above, "A Surprise for Santa Claus. How an enterprising Tommy got a hearing." Albert Reid was born in Concordia, Kansas, in 1873. He worked as a political cartoonist for Arthur Capper in Topeka at the Topeka Mail and Breeze. He also worked for the Kansas City Journal until 1909.

This photograph of the first floor center hall at Grinter Place shows children with Santa Claus. Harry and Bernice Hanson purchased Grinter Place, located in Wyandotte County, Kansas, from Reverend Henry C. and Martha V. Grinter Kirby's daughter in 1950. The Hansons owned and operated a chicken-dinner restaurant on the site until the mid-1960s. Built in 1857, Grinter Place is the oldest home in Wyandotte County and overlooks the historic Delaware Crossing on the Kansas River. It is a two-story brick house built and owned by Moses and Annie Grinter. He operated a ferry across the Kansas River and from 1855 to 1860, Grinter owned a trading post that sold about one hundred sixty types of goods including clothing, powder and bullets, perfume, sugar, and scissors, among other things to the Delawares in exchange for cash and furs. The Grinters also farmed, raised poultry and livestock, and planted an apple orchard on their farmstead. Through the assistance of the Junior League of Kansas City, Kansas, and the Grinter Place Friends, the State of Kansas acquired the site in 1971 and now administers the former Grinter residence as a state historic site.

This is a view of two staff members hanging a wreath above the mantle of the Sharp House, a residence for those patients of the Menninger Clinic who were learning to live on their own. The photograph shows the fireplace in the library of the Evelyn Sharp House. Evelyn Sharp, a trustee, donated the funds needed to purchase the house for use in After-Care Services. The Menninger Clinic has since moved to Houston, Texas, but the Sharp House is still a group home and is now owned by Valeo Behavioral Healthcare.

Christmas card with scene of "Old Fairgrounds," 1969. Louis Glynn was a stenographer for the Santa Fe Railroad. He was also a self-trained artist, and beginning in the 1940s, he created at least 300 Christmas cards by hand each year. He sketched a scene that was then printed on cards by a local print shop. Using an assembly line method, he hand colored and lettered each card and envelope.

Date: June 20, 1928
Harriet E. Adams wrote this reminiscence in 1928 about her childhood memories of Christmas. The story describes the family's preparations for Christmas, the activities of her older sister Zu Adams in creating an atmosphere appealing to her younger siblings, and their typical Christmas morning. Though the family lived in Topeka, Kansas at the time this reminiscence was written, they were living near Marysville in Marshall County when Harriet was seven. The story was written as part of the efforts of Lilla Day Monroe to collect reminiscences concerning the women's perspective in settling Kansas. Zu Adams was a long time employee of the Kansas State Historical Society and her father Franklin Adams was the first secretary (executive director) of the Society.
