Dr. Joseph Kovach directed a research project about the role of genetics with these Japanese quail. The Menninger Foundation supported many research projects related to furthering knowledge about mental health.

Dr. Joseph Kovach conducted a research project on genetics using Japanese quail. This photograph shows a quail chick choosing his path in a maze. Menninger is a leading psychiatric hospital dedicated to treating individuals with mood, personality, anxiety and addictive disorders, teaching mental health professionals and advancing mental healthcare through research. Once located in Topeka, Kansas, they relocated in 2003 to Houston, Texas.

This colored slide shows a view of a quail standing at the base of a small tree or bush in the Flint Hills region. The Flint Hills is a natural prairie grassland region which runs north and south through east-central Kansas. It is one of the largest areas of native grasslands left in the United States.
