Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company depot, Alma, Kansas
Date: 1955
This photograph shows the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company depot, located on the east edge of Alma, Kansas. The one-story building was constructed in 1880 as the depot for the Manhattan, Alma and Burlingame Railroad, which was the first railroad in Wabaunsee County. The first vote for a $100,000 bond to bring rail service to Wabaunsee County in 1866 failed, and growth in the county was very slow. In 1879, a $140,000 bond for the Manhattan, Alma and Burlingame Railroad passed, bringing the first rail service to the county in 1880. The railroad was later acquired by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe.
