Nancy Kassebaum

Nancy Kassebaum

Nancy Landon Kassebaum Baker was elected in 1978 as the woman first U. S. Senator from Kansas. As a senator, she worked tirelessly on issues such as reducing the budget deficift, arms control, and health care legislation. In her last term, she chaired the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources and was the second woman in U. S. history to chair a standing committee. After her retirement from the Senate in 1997, Kassebaum married former U. S. Senate majority leader Howard Baker of Tennessee.
