Four African-American grooms each stand ready to lead a percheron horse at the front of the float. The film includes club members; scenes from Independence; a brass band and fife and drum corps; a swimming and diving pool; a beauty contest; a Boy Scouts of America band from El Dorado, Kansas; a fashion show; and footage of actress Vivian Vance.

This is a motion picture film of the Medicine Lodge Indian Peace Treaty Pageant which commemorates the great Peace Council of 1867 between the U.S. Government and the Apache, Arapaho, Cheyenne, Comanche, and Kiowa Indians. The Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty re-enactment is staged in a natural amphitheater, near the actual site of the council where the Medicine River and Elm Creek converge near Medicine Lodge, Barber County, Kansas. The film also discusses early explorers, the extermination of the buffalo, the beginning of the cattle industry, and Carry Nation and the temperance movement.


Richardson photograph collection

Photograph collector, Dennis Richardson of Marysville, Kansas, donated these photographs to the Kansas Historical Society over a number of years. The collection includes many photographs by many different photographers, most of whom are unknown. The photographs are primarily of Marysville, Kansas, and the surrounding area. The Richardson collection includes thousands of photographs by Marysville photographer Oman Hawkins. For the most part, Richardson kept the Hawkins photos apart from the rest of the collection and many of those appear on Kansas Memory as the Omar Hawkins photograph collection, unit 216927. Images not yet digitized are available in the State Archives and Library research room.
