This series of photographs shows men working at the dike around the waterworks in Topeka, Kansas during the 1951 flood. One photo shows the filling of the sandbags and the other passing them along a long line to be placed on top of the dike and brick wall. Boy Scout Ernst F. Tonsing photographed and filled bags for 36 hours. While flood water did seep onto the grounds, the waterworks continued to pump clean water to the homes and businesses in Topeka.

These numerous photographs show flooding and flood damage from the Neosho River in Allen County, Kansas. High water marks can be seen on many buildings, as well as debris and destruction left by the water. Many homes, businesses, and public buildings were affected. These photographs were part of a preliminary survey by the Flood Control Committee of the Iola Chamber of Commerce on August 10, 1951. Many of the photos have additional information on their backs.

Viewing the aftermath of the 1951 flood to the Santa Fe Railway bridge in Topeka, Kansas. The extremely heavy rains during June and July of 1951 caused some of the greatest flooding ever seen in Kansas history. These high waters affected all the area river basins of the Kansas, Neosho, Marais des Cygnes and Verdigris.

A map drawn by Bessie E. Buell from Sunnyside, Kansas, showing creeks, schools, as well as places of historical significance of Paxton township (Township 15 South, Range 34 and 35 West), Logan county. Bessie also includes an essay about the local history of the township. The essay, which seems to have been written through discussions with "old settlers of Paxton," focuses on floods and water management, American Indian raids, and day-to-day life in the township. This is one of several maps drawn by school children for a contest organized by Judge J. C. Ruppenthal of Russell, Kansas. The maps were to meet a "requirement of presenting historical data, together with excellence and accuracy of drawing."

These photographs show the Carl Engel Drug, Grocery, and Hardware Store located in the 200 block of Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan, Kansas. The first photograph shows an interior view of the drug and grocery store. There are several men and women standing in the store, and display cases and shelves full of items for sale are also visible. The second photograph shows an interior view of the Engel Hardware Store. There are three men standing in the store, and visible hardware items include metal pots, kettles, cans, a display case full of scissors, brooms, and many other items. The third photograph shows an interior view of the drug and grocery store. There are three men and a woman standing in the store, and display cases and shelves full of items for sale are also visible. There is also a large potted plant visible on the left side of the picture. The fourth photograph is an exterior view of the Carl Engel Drug Store during the 1903 flood. Several men are visible standing on what appear to be rafts on the water in front of the store. One man is seen standing in the water with the water nearly up to his waist. The top of the building shows a construction date of 1885.

Here are six photographs taken from the Topeka Boulevard bridge looking west at the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad bridge. The photographs show one of the piers of the bridge failing and causing three spans to collapse into the Kansas River. The photographs were taken during the flood of 1951.
