Hollenberg ranch house, Washington County, Kansas
Date: Between 1950 and 1959
Three views of the Hollenberg ranch house. This house was built in 1857 by Gerat H. and Sophia Hollenberg, establishing a way station for travelers on the Oregon-California Trail, and from 1860 to 1861 they operated a Pony Express station. After Gerat Hollenberg's death in 1874, the station became a farm home until 1941 when the Kansas Legislature purchased the building and the surrounding seven acres. The site was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1961 and two years later, the Kansas Historical Society was given the responsibility to operate it as Hollenberg Pony Express Station Historic Site.

These letters, spanning 1885 to 1886, are from Kansas state officials and other individuals regarding the Justices of the Peace for Washington County Kansas to Kansas Governor John Martin. The letters discuss the resignation of predecessors as well as the recommendation and appointment of Justices of the Peace. Those appointed were Wallace W. Shipley, William C. Mason, and G. W. Roberts.

The map was published by MacLean & Lawrence and printed by William Schuchman & Bro. in Philadelphia. This map is provided through a co-operative project between the Lecompton Historical Society and the Kansas Historical Society. Partial funding was provided by the Ross and Margaret Wulfkuhle Charitable Trust and the Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area. Mitchell's Sectional Map of Kansas

A sectional map of eastern portions of Kansas Territory. The map was compiled from the field notes in the Surveyor Generals Office by David T. Mitchell, a U. S. Surveyor and Land Agent in Lecompton, Kansas. Towns, county boundaries, and Indian reservations are identified on the map. This map is provided through a co-operative project between the Lecompton Historical Society and the Kansas Historical Society. Partial funding was provided by the Ross and Margaret Wulfkuhle Charitable Trust and the Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area. People's Party and Democratic State Committees, box two

This manuscript collection consists of assembled materials regarding the People's Party and the Democratic State Committees in Kansas. It includes political correspondence between state and local committees, legal documents, newspaper clippings, lists of local voters and their political affiliations, and other such materials. The correspondence largely concerns organizing and discussing meetings and organizing for and watching election campaigns. Much of the collection is organized alphabetically by county, and most of the materials date from 1902.

Thimble from the Hollenberg Pony Express Station, 14WH316
Date: 1857-1941
This brass thimble was recovered by Kansas Historical Society archeologists at the Hollenberg Pony Express Station, in Washington County, the location of a pony express station, a post office, a blacksmith shop, and a farm with barns and other outbuildings. The site, also a stop on the Oregon-California trail, was purchased by the Kansas Legislature in 1941 and is in the National Register of Historic Places. Thimbles were worn to protect the finger while pushing through a needle during sewing. The thimble has the lettering "SEW INDUSTRY" around the base. The Hollenberg Pony Express Station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966, and earlier, as a National Historic Landmark in 1961.

Records of livestock brands in Washington County, Kansas, as compiled by workers on a project sponsored by the Kansas State Planning Board. The forms provide the owner's name and county in which he or she resided; date brand was registered; whether it was used for cattle, horses, sheep, or hogs; a brief description usually indicating where the brand was placed on the animal; and a copy of the brand design. The registrations in these folders are roughly in chronological order by date filed.
