1968 Excavations at Fort Hays, 14EL301

These photographs were taken by Kansas Historical Society archeological staff during excavation at historic Fort Hays in Ellis County in 1968. The excavations took place in the area of the officer's quarters (Officer's Row). Shown are two views of the House 4 cellar excavation, the archeological excavations of the foundations for Houses 2 through 6 in progress, and a toy dish discovered in the House 5 excavations. Fort Hays was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and is a State Historic Site.

This photograph shows a general view of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company depot in Augusta, Kansas. The brick structure built between 1917 and 1918 still stands and is used by Burlington Northern Railway Company.

This photograph shows the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company depot in Cherryvale, Kansas. This one-story "county-seat" style depot features a gabled roof, an operator's bay and an open waiting room. At the peaks of the roof are the Santa Fe emblems commonly associated with a county-seat depot. The structure is a part of the Eastern Lines, Oklahoma District, Third District, along mile post 155.8. The depot has been refurbished and is in private use.

This photograph shows the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company depot in Great Bend, Kansas. The "county seat" style depot, built in 1911 with white bricks, features an open waiting room and enclosed freight room. The Santa Fe emblems located at the pitch roof and operator's bay are commonly associated with a "county seat" depot. The structure still stands but is no longer in operation.
