The officer observing the soldiers firing is the company commander. His mess kit is hanging up to dry as they fight. Arthur Jehu Stanley, Sr.

This is a cabinet card showing Arthur Jehu Stanley, Sr., who served in the Kansas House of Representatives from 1899-1900. Stanley, a Republican, represented District 86 in Lincoln County. He read law under the tutelage of a local lawyer in Lincoln, Kansas and was admitted to the Kansas Bar. Stanley moved his family to Kansas City, Kansas in 1911 where he practiced law for 44 years. In 1921, Arthur Jehu Stanley, Sr. served in the Kansas House of Representatives where he represented District 8, Kansas City, Kansas. His son, Arthur Jehu Stanley, Jr., joined his father in private practice in 1928 and later became a U.S. District Judge for the state of Kansas.

This black and white photograph shows engineer Jim Phillip greasing the wheels on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company's steam locomotive #244 at Arkansas City, Kansas. The locomotive was built by the Schenectady Locomotive Works of Schenectady, New York, and was originally the Chicago, Kansas & Western #8. It was later renumbered San Francisco & San Joaquin Valley #202, and renumbered in 1900 as ATSF #46. It was scrapped for metal at San Bernardino, California, on June 26, 1922.

This is a cabinet card showing Carl Friend, his wife and their son Paul. Carl Friend was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1869. After graduating from Kansas State College in 1888, he worked as a civil engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1889, Friend entered the lumber business in Jackson County, Kansas. He was appointed to the State Board of Regents in 1902 and in 1909, he moved to Lawrence and started a lumber business and owned a farm. Friend was a member of the Advisory Council of Alumni Association of Kansas State College and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees to the Kansas University Endowment Association. He began his political career in 1933, serving as a state senator from 1933 to 1937. In 1939, Friend was elected Lieutenant Governor and served with Governor Payne Ratner until 1943.
