Handbook of Osborne County, Kansas

This handbook was published by the Junction Steam Print Press in Kansas City, Missouri, for immigrants possibly traveling to Kansas. It encouraged agricultural settlement in the Solomon River Valley. The text tells of the community's schools and churches, the abundant natural resources, and shows lithographs of local ranches and businesses. There is also a statistical chart for every township in Osborne County, listing information on crops, livestock, and items related to the household.

The mayor of Portis Kansas, J. P. Thomas, telegrams Kansas Governor Henry J. Allen about the poor condition of coal received. The state had taken over the southeast Kansas coal fields following a series of coal strikes in the winter of 1919. Communities experienced delays in shipments of coals and oftentimes coal not well suited to their needs.

Topics in the correspondence discuss the legality of soliciting funds for purposes as described when taking out a license, but if the solicitor uses the funds for something else they are in violation of the criminal laws. This is part of a bigger collection of Governor Arthur Capper correspondence.

This letter sent to Governor Capper's office from J.W. Buck of Portis, Kansas, requests a permit to serve the poor and suffering in his community. These two sepia photographs show a group of students standing in front of a sod school house in Osborne County, Kansas. On the back of the photographs the town of "Portis" is written. These students can also be seen in Kansas Memory item number 211997. The use of sod was common on the Great Plains for homes and schools due to the lack of wood and other natural resources available.
