This photograph shows the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company depot at Moline, Kansas. The wooden structure with batten siding was built in 1887. It was part of the Eastern Lines, Eastern Division, Howard District at milepost 83.6 and the Oklahoma Division, Fourth District at milepost 202.4. The depot was moved to Dexter, Kansas and is in private use.

Map and timetable of the Kansas City, Lawrence and Southern Kansas Railroad line from Kansas City to Harper, Kansas. The route included branches to Lawrence, Burlington, Coffeyville, and Hunnewell. The company advertised itself as "passing through the great wheat belts of the Neosho and Arkansas Valleys to the grazing and cattle fields of south-western Kansas and Indian Territory." The company encouraged settlement along 150 miles of the Oklahoma border with descriptions of the soil and climate for those emigrating to southern Kansas.

These are panoramic photographs of Kansas towns beginning with Leavenworth and ending with Norway. The Kansas Film Commission created the photos to promote Kansas locations to film companies. Many of the photographs show business districts and buildings. The panoramics were created by taking individual photos and taping them together. Towns and cities included in this part of the collection are: Leavenworth, Ludell, Luray, Lyndon, Lyons, Manchester, Manter, Marion, Mayetta, McCune, McDonald, McFarland, McPherson, Medicine Lodge, Melvern, Menlo, Meriden, Merriam, Milan, Miltonvale, Mission, Moline, Monument, Morganville, Morrill, Moscow, Mulberry, Mullinvale, Mulvane, Munden, Narka, Natoma, Nekoma, Neodesha, Neosho Falls, Neosho Rapids, Netawaka, New Albany, Newton, Nicodemus, Norcatur, Norton, Nortonville, and Norway. Photos of courthouses are included for several communities. Some of the photos of communities show churches, grain elevators, water towers, parks, public/government buildings, railroad depots and tracks, and residences. There are some aerial photographs for McFarland and Melvern.

Around 1919, the Kansas State Historical Society and the American Legion solicited biographical information from returning veterans (primarily members of the 35th and 89th infantry divisions) and the families of those who died in service, notably from the Gold Star Mothers. Each veteran or family member was asked to provide letters, photographs, a biography, and military records. This file contains information on Marion Milton Beal, U.S. Marine. Marion died from pneumonia on October 5, 1918 at Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Santa Fe Demonstration Train

These posters advertise Santa Fe demonstration trains traveling in Kansas in 1930 and 1931. The purpose of the 1930 train (8 cars) was to present a plan for higher profits on wheat farms. Tom L. Bair, the State's champion wheat grower, was part of the 1930 train. It's travel dates were July 21 through August 2, 1930. The 1931 train (9 cars) was designed to present a plan for more profits in the beef cattle industry. The 1931 train had special features for women and children and it was traveling throughout the state from August 24 through September 5, 1931. The towns where the train would stop each year are listed on the posters. The trains were operated jointly by the Santa Fe and the Kansas State Agricultural College. J. F. Jarrell, manager of Agricultural Development for Santa Fe, was the organizer of these trains. The posters make a point of emphasizing that the speakers will be on a flat car "equipped with electrically controlled voice amplifiers. Visitors remaining in their automobiles will be able to hear perfectly."

Santa Fe lime special

The Lime Special was operated by the Santa Fe Railway in cooperation with the Kansas State Agricultural College and the Kansas State Board of Agriculture. It was scheduled to operate July 9--17, 1928. Five cars of exhibits were available along with a series of lectures. The quote at the bottom of the poster was "MORE LIME, MORE LEGUMES, MORE CROPS, MORE PROFIT."
