Poster announcing the fifth annual Potawatomi Indian Fair held in Mayetta, Kansas. Activities include a parade, sulky races, lacrosse, baseball, snake dances, and broncho riding. The poster also promotes the Haskell Indian Band.

Fred Iles correspondence
Date: 1906-1930
Fred Iles was assistant right of way and tax agent for the Kansas Town and Land Company which bought and sold lands on the right of way of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway Company. In 1917, he assumed Ernest Warren Cline's position as right of way agent, responsible for representing the railroad's interest in all matters concerning the acquisition and disposition of land on the right of way. This correspondence includes Iles' activities and expenses accounts at the behest of E. W. Cline and the CRI&P Railway.

Towns and cities included in this part of the collection are: Leavenworth, Ludell, Luray, Lyndon, Lyons, Manchester, Manter, Marion, Mayetta, McCune, McDonald, McFarland, McPherson, Medicine Lodge, Melvern, Menlo, Meriden, Merriam, Milan, Miltonvale, Mission, Moline, Monument, Morganville, Morrill, Moscow, Mulberry, Mullinvale, Mulvane, Munden, Narka, Natoma, Nekoma, Neodesha, Neosho Falls, Neosho Rapids, Netawaka, New Albany, Newton, Nicodemus, Norcatur, Norton, Nortonville, and Norway. Photos of courthouses are included for several communities. Some of the photos of communities show churches, grain elevators, water towers, parks, public/government buildings, railroad depots and tracks, and residences. There are some aerial photographs for McFarland and Melvern.

In 1949, the Owls baseball team was a locally owned team and played in the Western Association league. Kansas players on the team included Jack Bell, Salina; Johnny Bulkley, Reading; Jack Dean, Harveyville; Alec Grieves, Burlingame; Bob Lee, Topeka; Dick McConnell, Topeka; Jerry Neimitz, Marysville, Dick Pahmahmie, Mayetta; and Ed Wilson, Topeka.

The largest item in this group is a list of Potawatomi allottees complied by Colonel Henry J. Aten around 1905. The accompanying correspondence, that discusses the list of allottees, consists of letters between William Elsey Connelley of the Kansas State Historical Society, A. R. Snyder, Superintendent and Special Distribution Agent for the United States Indian Service, and W.W. Bennett, Superintendent of the U.S. Indian Service. Also included is a two-page, hand-written document titled "Location of Agency Buildings."

Roy Frazier enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and served until 1946 in the Armed Guard aboard the San Lucas and the Juliel Dumont. The Armed Guard was part of the Navy but they provided defense of merchant ships, with 28 men from the Navy assigned per ship. Frazier did basic training in Farragut, Idaho, and additional training at a San Diego gunnery school. He was born near Mayetta, Kansas on Jaunuary 5, 1924. Frazier was interviewed by Suzette McCord-Rogers on Nov 11, 2007, about his military experiences in the Second World War. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the community institutions receiving grants. The transcript of the interview is presented here; the original video copy of the interview is available through the Doniphan County Historical Society (Troy) and through the Kansas State Historical Society.
