Alfred Plummer, World War I soldier

Around 1919, the Kansas State Historical Society and the American Legion solicited biographical information from returning veterans (primarily members of the 35th and 89th infantry divisions) and the families of those who died in service, notably from the Gold Star Mothers. Each veteran or family member was asked to provide letters, photographs, a biography, and military records. This file contains information on Alfred Plummer. Alfred died of pneumonia on December 8, 1918 at Fort Ethan Allen, Vermont.

Don Otto enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and served until 1945 in the 576th Signal Company, 35th Quartermaster Truck Company. Interviewed by Deborah Pye on Jul 25, 2007, Otto talked about military experiences in the Second World War. He was in Iceland, Ireland, and England. His unit was in Normandy shortly after the invasion delivering supplies. His unit provided support for the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he returned to Lawrence and used to G. I. Bill to attend a school that taught farming, but he was not sure of the name. He was born January 20, 1920, and lived in Lawrence, Eudora, and Clearfield before the war. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the community institutions receiving grants. Harold Zimmerman enlisted in the Merchant Marine in 1943 and served on the Joseph Simon, Alcoa Pennant, Scagway Victory , Marin Hills. Interviewed by Nancy L. Porter on Nov 2, 2007, Zimmerman talked about military experiences in the Second World War. Zimmerman, usually called Lee, was born in Eudora Kansas on November 30, 1925. He graduated from Eudora High School in 1943. He provides good descriptions of life on his various ships. He also served during the Korean War. He is involved in the Zimmerman Steel Company, Lawrence. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. There are interiors of the Brown Grand Theatre in the Concordia folder. The theatre was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Richard Steffen enlisted in the Army (Air Force) and was sworn in on October 28, 1942, and served until February 14, 1946, in the 489th Squadron. He was stationed in Midland, Texas, and at Lunken Air Force Base, Ohio and worked as a records clerk. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on Jun 28, 2007, Steffen talked about military experiences in the Second World War. Steffen was born in Haviland Kansas on September 18, 1922. His family moved to Eudora, Olathe, and back to Eudora. He graduated from Eudora Hish School in 1940. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. Santa Fe lime special

Santa Fe lime special

The Lime Special was operated by the Santa Fe Railway in cooperation with the Kansas State Agricultural College and the Kansas State Board of Agriculture. It was scheduled to operate July 9--17, 1928. Five cars of exhibits were available along with a series of lectures. The quote at the bottom of the poster was "MORE LIME, MORE LEGUMES, MORE CROPS, MORE PROFIT."
