A portrait of astronaut Joe Henry Engle, of Chapman, Kansas, who commanded the second Space Shuttle "Columbia" mission in 1981 and a Space Shuttle "Discovery" mission in 1985. Born August 26, 1932 in Dickinson County, Kansas, Engle graduated from the University of Kansas in 1956.

These are panoramic photographs of locations in Kansas created by the Kansas Film Commission to promote scenes to film companies. The panoramics were created by taking individual photos and taping them together. The photographs are arranged alphabetically by subject and then location. The subject of this part of the collection is businesses, including banks, bars, general stores, food stores, funeral homes, gas stations, hotels, malls, miscellaneous buildings, newspaper offices, restaurants, toy stores, and workshops.

Around 1919, the Kansas State Historical Society and the American Legion solicited biographical information from returning veterans (primarily members of the 35th and 89th infantry divisions) and the families of those who died in service, notably from the Gold Star Mothers. Each veteran or family member was asked to provide letters, photographs, a biography, and military records. This file contains information on Paul Sanborn, Engineers.

Poster announcing a public welcoming ceremony for astronaut Joe Engle and his wife Mary on the South Lawn of the State Capitol in Topeka on December 3, 1981. Joe H. Engle (1932- ) was born and raised in Chapman, Kansas. He was the commander for the Space Shuttle Columbia's second orbital test flight on November 12, 1981, during which he became the first and only pilot to manually fly the Shuttle through reentry and landing. He retired from NASA and the Air Force in November of 1986, having logged more than 14,700 flight hours, including over 244 hours in space, and having flown over 185 different types of aircraft. Joe Engle was married to Mary Catherine Lawrence of Mission Hills, Kansas.

This file includes general correspondence where the Secretary to the Governor replies to an earlier letter on January 23 from George B. Frost of Chapman, Kansas. Frost requests Governor Capper to meet with Representative Lamb about a proposed legislation. The correspondence is incomplete and does not contain the letter from Frost. This is part of a bigger collection of Governor Arthur Capper correspondence.

This item details the amount of contributions to the United Service Organizations (U.S.O.) from cities and counties in Kansas during 1941. Totaling almost $90,000, the U.S.O. campaign in Kansas was quite successful and helped support a number of services for Americans serving in uniform during World War II. The report lists the contributions by city and the nature of the fund raising. There was a campaign in movie theaters that raised almost $9,000 from 84 cities. The list includes the names of the theaters. Local newspapers, which provided publicity, are often listed as well. The members of the local U.S. O. committees are listed, occasionally.
