Address to the Voters of Kansas

The numerous authors of this pamphlet (Republicans) support the constitutional amendments to approve voting rights for blacks, for women, and to restrict voting rights to "loyal persons." They offer arguments for their position as well as criticizing the Democratic Party in Kansas for their opposition to these amendments. Green, Baldwin City. Only the language restricting voting to "loyal" persons was passed in the election on November 5, 1867. Blacks and women were not given voting rights as a result of the 1867 election.

Copies of Aetna Insurance Company fire policy records for insured properties in Lawrence and Baldwin, Douglas County and Osage County, Kansas. The records include amount insured; descriptions of the buildings including the date built, construction materials, fuel, lights, and size; businesses occupying the structures; present cash values; locations; specification of renewal; copy of endorsements; and assignments or transfers. Many of the buildings were located on Massachusetts Street in Lawrence.

Alois (Bud) Madl was inducted into the Army (Infantry) in 1944 and served until 1946. He was stationed in Belgium and Czechoslovakia. Interviewed by Brian Grubbs on Jun 12, 2007, Madl talked about military experiences in the Second World War. He was born near Baldwin City on Februrary 6, 1926. He attended Prospect School and one year of Baldwin High School. After that he work on the family dairy farm with his father. Anti-Saloon League materials

These materials relate to the Kansas Department of the Anti-Saloon League of America. Correspondence is primarily between State Superintendent W.J. Herwig and Reverend Milo G. Kelser, field manager at the Anti-Saloon League of America headquarters in Westerville, Ohio. Correspondence is also exchanged with Reverend Julius Smith and Professor O. G. Markham of Baldwin City. Travel itineraries, legislation, and the effects of World War I are frequent topics of conversation. The group sought to organize prohibition meetings in conjunction with Sunday church services around the state. Monthly financial reports are also included.

This photograph shows a general view of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company depot in Baldwin, Kansas. The one-story brick building, built in 1907, features a hip roof, arched windows, a freight room and two waiting rooms. The depot was once part of the Eastern Lines, Eastern Division, Lawrence District, at mile post 15.4. The structure still stands and has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Cecil Stecher enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served until 1946. He was a Navy Air cadet and trained as a torpedo bomber. He was born June 14, 1925, near Baldwin, Kansas. He attended grade school at Spring Creek and Prairie City and graduated from Baldwin High School. He worked at the Sunflower Ordinance Works in DeSoto before joining the Navy. Interviewed by Deborah Pye on Jun 12, 2007, Stecher talked about military experiences in the Second World War. James B. Abbott, as secretary of the 10th district committee of the Free State party, prepared this broadside to advertise a meeting to nominate two Senators and seven Representatives for the Legislature. Abbott wrote that the district included the following precincts: "Fish's Hotel, Palmyra, Blanton, Willow Springs, Franklin, Lawrence, and Benicia." The meeting was to be held in Lawrence on July 25, 1857.
