9th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry, Company D

This is a poster for the 9th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry, Company D. It contains the names of officers, enlisted men, and those soldiers that were transferred, discharged, died, and deserted. The home towns of the soldiers are listed also. The poster has colored illustrations depicting the Civil War. The company was organized in Iola, Kansas. A history of the company is at the bottom of the poster but it is difficult to read. Portions of the poster have deteriorated.

This 1859 abstract of census returns shows information at the township level for most Kansas counties. Some counties are listed without data. The census lists the number of voters in three different ways--the number of votes cast June 7, 1859; number of voters on June 7, 1859 who were under 6 month provision; and number of voters under 3 month provision. It also lists the number of inhabitants. The election on June 7, 1859, was to elect delegates to the Wyandotte constitutional convention.

In this letter, from A.L. Foster of the Chicago Urban League to the manager of Kelly's Hotel in Iola, Kansas, details Foster's experiences at the hotel in the winter of 1945. Foster, a passenger on a bus from Ft. Scott to Wichita, was asked to sit in the rear section of the restaurant solely because he was an African American.

Allen County Jail is located in Iola, Allen County, Kansas. It was built in 1869 by White and Hays. The building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

These numerous photographs show flooding and flood damage from the Neosho River in Allen County, Kansas. High water marks can be seen on many buildings, as well as debris and destruction left by the water. Many homes, businesses, and public buildings were affected. These photographs were part of a preliminary survey by the Flood Control Committee of the Iola Chamber of Commerce on August 10, 1951. Many of the photos have additional information on their backs.

The forms provide the owner's name and county in which he or she resided; date brand was registered; whether it was used for cattle, horses, sheep, or hogs; a brief description usually indicating where the brand was placed on the animal; and a copy of the brand design. The registrations in this folder are in alphabetical order by owner.

Around 1919, the Kansas State Historical Society and the American Legion solicited biographical information from returning veterans (primarily members of the 35th and 89th infantry divisions) and the families of those who died in service, notably from the Gold Star Mothers. Each veteran or family member was asked to provide letters, photographs, a biography, and military records. This file contains information on Alvin Artie Gregg, Company L, 353rd Infantry, 89th Division.

A letter from A.R. Sleeper of Iola, Kansas, to Kansas Senator Arthur Capper in Topeka. Sleeper, a member of the Allen County Selective Service Board, asks that the operation of Selective Service be reviewed by Congress. He states that there are not enough men left in the county to run the farms, businesses, and factories that drafted men had once filled and that action should be taken to fix this problem.

The one-story "county seat" style depot features a gabled roof, with a operator's bay, waiting room, and a enclosed freight room. The facility was part of the Eastern Lines, Eastern Division, Third District rail line.

The prairie-style station featured a hipped roof, a semi-hexagonal operator's bay and matching waiting room. The red-brick structure was located on the Eastern Lines, Eastern Division, Third District along mile post 109.7. The depot was razed in the 1970s

The Automobile Club of Wichita published this year book for the years 1909-1910. Its content reflects that automobile travel was a recent introduction to the lives of Kansans. It includes advertisements from automobile dealers, garages, and other businesses in Wichita, Hutchinson, Newton, Winfield, El Dorado, Dodge City, Yates Center, Iola, Independence, Topeka, Emporia, Garden City, and Lawrence. It also lists the officers and board of directors of the club, its constitution and bylaws, the Kansas law regulation the use of automobiles, two Wichita ordinances (#2875 and 3002) related to the use of cars, and rules of the road. The bulk of the yearbook provides driving routes to and from various cities and towns in Kansas, as well as Colorado and Oklahoma. An index to the routes and maps is on pages 22-23. These driving routes include specific directions and include references to many small towns and local landmarks, etc. The yearbook also lists Wichita residents that own automobiles, their license numbers and the type of automobile they own. The booklet concludes with a list of members of the automobile club.
