40th Annual GAR Encampment, Manhattan, Kansas

This panorimic photograph shows the Civil War veterans and others who attended the 40th Annual Encampment of the Kansas Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). It was held at Community Hall, Manhattan, Kansas, May 18, 19, and 20, 1921. The GAR was the veterans organization for Civil War soldiers. This image shows the veterans, some members of the women's auxiliary, and some young boys in the front row. There is also a drum near the center of the image for the Civil War Veterans Drum Corps, No 25, Garfiled Post, Wichita, Kansas. There are several other drums and musical instruments in the photograph.

This article discusses how the state of Kansas will work to conform to the ruling made in the Brown v. Board of Education decision on May 17, 1954. The U.S. Supreme Court had ruled that the segregation of schools based on race was unconstitutional. Many cities in Kansas, including Topeka, Atchison, Salina, Wichita, and Pittsburg were already working to integrate their schools. Topeka had an estimated 625 African American students who would be affected by the court's ruling, and the article lists the numbers for other cities and towns in the state.

This 1859 abstract of census returns shows information at the township level for most Kansas counties. Some counties are listed without data. The census lists the number of voters in three different ways--the number of votes cast June 7, 1859; number of voters on June 7, 1859 who were under 6 month provision; and number of voters under 3 month provision. It also lists the number of inhabitants. The election on June 7, 1859, was to elect delegates to the Wyandotte constitutional convention.

The numerous authors of this pamphlet (Republicans) support the constitutional amendments to approve voting rights for blacks, for women, and to restrict voting rights to "loyal persons." They offer arguments for their position as well as criticizing the Democratic Party in Kansas for their opposition to these amendments. Adolph Roenigk and George W. Martin correspondence

In this correspondence with George W. Martin of the Kansas State Historical Society, Adolph Roenigk addresses issues related to the Pawnee Indians. In the letter dated October 10, 1904, Roenigk explains that "a Battle between the Potowatomie and the Pawnee Indians was fought here [Lincoln, Kansas] in 1863." According to Roenigk, between 14 and 16 Native Indians were killed during the fighting. Similarly, Roenigk's letter of October 24, 1906, concerns violence between Kansans and Native Indians during the late 1860s when a man named Solomon Humbarger and Solomon's brother were attacked by Native Indians. After killing one of their chiefs Roenigk states that Humbarger was shot in the thigh with an arrow.

This letter from Manhattan, Kansas to Governor Capper addresses a proposed compulsory student activity fee at Kansas State Agricultural College. Support and opposition for the bill is divided at the school between athletes, fraternity and sorority members, and "well-to-do students"; and those who are working their way through college. The student asks Governor Capper to give them an opportunity to address their opposition to the compulsory fee. This is part of a bigger collection of Governor Arthur Capper correspondence.

Albert C. Morton to Hiram Hill

Albert Morton wrote from Quindaro, Kansas Territory, to Hiram Hill in Massachusetts. Morton predicted a good property market for the coming spring, despite the "hard money matters" which had been the situation during the winter. He reported that the Shawnee lands would open soon, to have them paid for by the end of the summer, and that Hill's land investments in Manhattan were "in good standing". Morton added that Samuel Simpson has been busy lately, traveling back and forth from Quindaro to Lawrence.

Brass and steel surveying chain. Albert D. Searl used this chain to survey town sites in Kansas Territory. He came to Kansas from Massachusetts in 1854. He apparently was associated with S.C. Pomeroy, agent for the New England Emigrant Aid Company that organized antislavery settlements in the territory. Searl laid out the city limits and streets of Lawrence, Kansas, in September 1854, and three months later conducted the first regular survey of Topeka. Later he surveyed Manhattan, Osawatomie, Burlington, El Dorado, and other Kansas towns.
