Abstract of title report

This is the complete abstract of title for lots 1 and 2, Block 10, in the Crescent Park 3rd Addition to Hutchinson, Kansas. The abstract contains a condensed history of the ownership for the property, beginning with the first transfer of the parcel to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad Co. in 1873, then listing each subsequent owner of the land up to 1967, when the abstract was compiled. It includes copies of the records from each time the property went through probate court proceedings. The plat map on page 2 includes Robinson's First Addition and part of the Central Land & Town Company's Second Addition. The legal description for that area is the southeast quarter and part of the southwest quarter of section 1, township 23 south, range 6 west. The map shows the route of the railroad spur that originally carried people to the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Since 1913, the fairgrounds has been located north of Crescent Boulevard. The record of the Crescent Park 3rd Addition begins on page 13, with a plat map of the addition on page 28. The neighborhood restrictions, which applied for 25 years from November 2, 1915, include the statement that "none of said lots shall be conveyed to owned or occupied by other than persons of the white race as owners or tenants." This was one method that was used in Kansas to create segregated neighborhoods.

The building, located on the southeast corner of Sherman and Main streets, also houses Raff Brothers Dry Goods and other stores. Several people are visible in front of the stores, and a few people are visible sitting in the windows of the upper part of the store on the left side of the picture. A large American flag is also seen flying above the building.

This 58" x 48" pastel is titled American Woman and her Political Peers. Pictured at the center is Frances E. Willard, American educator and reformer. Portrayed around Miss Willard (clockwise from upper left) are a mentally disabled man, a convict, a madman, and a disenfranchised Native American. Henrietta Briggs-Wall of Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas, designed the picture and commissioned Mr. W. A. Ford, also of Hutchinson, to execute it. Mrs. Briggs-Wall was active with the Kansas Equal Suffrage Association and with national and state chapters of the Women's Christian Temperance Union.

This photograph shows the dining room of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company's Fred Harvey Bisonte Hotel in Hutchinson, Kansas. The facility designed by architect J.G. Holland opened in November of 1897. For a number of years the hotel provided accommodations until the late 1940s when it closed its doors due to the decline in rail services. The building was razed between 1964 and 1965.

This photograph shows a furnished bedroom at the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company's Fred Harvey Bisonte Hotel in Hutchinson, Kansas. The eighty guest room facility designed by architect J.G. Holland opened in November of 1897. The hotel closed in the late 1940s due to the decline in rail services. The building was razed between 1964 and 1965.
