An Agrarian Site in Phillips County, 14PH315

Shown are the remains of a limestone foundation and wall as they stood when the slide was shot in 1979 by a Kansas Historical Society archeologist. Each stone had tool dressing marks on from hand quarrying. The highest portion of the wall was 3 feet and it is estimated that the structure, purpose unknown, measured 16 feet by 10 feet.

This collection consists of correspondence between individuals and committee members to the state chair of the Woman's Committee of the Kansas Council of National Defense. The Council of National Defense was established at the federal level in 1916 as an emergency agency under the Army Appropriation Act and abolished in 1921. It was created in reaction to World War I to coordinate resources and industries for national defense and improve civilian morale. The Woman's Committee of the Kansas Council of National Defense performed the same functions at the state and local levels, coordinating women's activities for national defense. The materials are organized alphabetically by county. The digitization of this collection was paid for through the Margot R. Swovelan Endowment Fund.

This file includes a letter from Ed R. Korns of Phillipsburg, Kansas recommending to Kansas Governor St. John, Charles Dickey for County Surveyor of Phillips county. The following letters support Charles Dickey as Phillips County Surveyor. Also included is a petition to have Charles Dickey appointed as County Surveyor for Phillips county.

These letters, spanning 1887 to 1888, are from the residents and offices of Phillips County, Kansas regarding the county surveyor to Kansas Governor John Martin. Jacob Poppen wrote his resignation from the county surveyor. William B. Stubert and F. R. Weeks both have endorsements and signed petitions for their appointment. Phillips County was organized on July 26, 1872 and named for William Phillips, a free-state resident who was tarred and feathered in Leavenworth County in 1855, forced to leave, and killed a year later by ruffians.

Around 1919, the Kansas State Historical Society and the American Legion solicited biographical information from returning veterans (primarily members of the 35th and 89th infantry divisions) and the families of those who died in service, notably from the Gold Star Mothers. Each veteran or family member was asked to provide letters, photographs, a biography, and military records. This file contains information on Edward Lee Whitney, Company A, 110th Engineers, 35th Division. Whitney died on August 24, 1917 at El Reno, Oklahoma.

This biennial report from the Kansas State Board of Agriculture contains two parts and the page numbering starts over at the beginning of Part II. The volume contains a section on each county, providing summary information about the history of the county, a description of the landscape, crops, livestock, schools, and churches. A large number of tables with statistics about Kansas residents and crop yields, broken down by county, are also included. Other chapters are devoted to interesting subjects such as apiculture, artificial forests, loco weeds, and chinch bugs.

This biennial report from the Kansas State Board of Agriculture includes information on the selection, cultivation, and harvesting of Indian corn, ideas for improving the conditions of farm life, and information on commercial fertilizers. There are various kinds of statistics for each county that include population, acreages, livestock, and assessed valuation of property. There are also a number of tables listing statistics for all counties. The proceedings and activities of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture are included beginning on page 977. Please see the table of contents on image 8 to determine appropriate page numbers. Page numbering starts over after page 1264. This section contains compiled statistics from the 1905 Kansas decennial census but individuals are not listed. A general index starts on page 61 of the Decennial Census section at the back of the volume.

This biennial report covers the years 1885-86. The volume contains two parts and the page numbering starts over at the beginning of part II. The volume contains numerous agricultural statistics and information about other industries. It also contains information about Kansas weather, schools, churches, various agricultural issues such as Texas fever, chinch bugs, vacant public lands, etc. A major part of the volume is devoted to information gathered during the 1885 statewide census conducted by the Board of Agriculture. Part I contains a number of tables with statistics about Kansas residents broken down by county. Part I also contains a section on each county, providing summary information about the history of the county, nativity of residents, a description of the landscape, crops, livestock, schools, newspapers, banks, and a list of county officers for 1887. Proceedings and other activities of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture are in Part II.

Obstetrical forceps. Black wooden handles. From the medical office of Dr. Floyd E. Richmond (1872-1955) of Stockton, Kansas. Dr. Richmond practiced medicine in Stockton for thirty years, and his office was upstairs in the Dye Building. He also served as the Postmaster of Logan. W.F. Ford first joined with Caswell, Hazard and Company in 1874. They dissolved the partnership in 1891, although both firms remained in operation through at least 1900.

This letter from Harry Umberger, the Director of Extension at Kansas State Agricultural College (now Kansas State University), accompanied a map designating the drought relief counties as of July 1934. The map indicates the primary and secondary drought relief counties suffering the most through the Great Depression and Dust Bowl of the 1930s. The map includes a key to explain the highlighted portions.

History of Kansas newspapers

History of Kansas newspapers

The subtitle of this publication is "A History of the Newspapers and Magazines Published in Kansas From the Organization of Kansas Territory, 1854, to January 1, 1916." This history includes biographical sketches and some portraits of prominent editors. The bulk of the book contains listings of all of the newspapers published in the state, organized by county and then towns within that county. This listing begins on page 137. Newspapers that were being published in 1916 include the name of the editor/publisher, the frequency, how long it had been published, and notes about any predecessor papers. The information for each county also includes a list of all discontinued newspapers from that county. Each county listing begins with the date it was organized, the origin of the name, and some basic statistics. This volume is an excellent source on the early newspaper history of Kansas. A detailed index begins on page 323. The Kansas State Historical Society was founded by Kansas newspaper editors and its newspaper holdings represent an almost comprehensive collection of the newspapers published in all parts of Kansas, most of which are available on microfilm through interlibrary loan.

This photograph shows inmates James McClellan, prisoner #8418 and Ed Sands, prisoner #7666. James McClellan was received at the Kansas State Penitentiary on January 23, 1898 from Ford County, Kansas for burglary and larceny. Inmate Ed Sands was received at the penitentiary on January 21, 1896 from Phillips County, Kansas for rape.

This photograph shows inmates John Trimble, prisoner #9333 and William Scholl, prisoner #8605. John Trimble was received at the Kansas State Penitentiary on April 28, 1900 from Phillips County, Kansas for murder. William Scholl, also known by the surname spelling Schall, was received at the penitentiary on July 1, 1898 from Montgomery County, Kansas for grand larceny.

A letter on July 8, 1872, from Henry Booth, asks Kansas Governor Harvey to appoint George Cox as Justice of the Peace of Pawnee County. A petition from citizens of Pawnee County request Joseph Criley be appointed as Justice of the Peace. A petition from residents of Phillips County recommends William B. Booge(?) for the position as Justice of the Peace. A separate petition from citizens of Phillips County request C.J. VanAllen for the appointment as Justice of the Peace of their county.

These letters, spanning 1885 to 1886, are from Kansas state officials and other individuals regarding the Justices of the Peace for Phillips County Kansas to Kansas Governor John Martin. The letters discuss the resignation of predecessors as well as the recommendation and appointment of Justices of the Peace. Those appointed were W. G. Day, John Myers, A. C. Hall, D. H. Lingle, and Charles Dickey.

These reports, published by the Kansas Board of Pharmacy, may include the secretary's annual report to the governor, board proceedings, cases prosecuted, laws, rules and regulations, legal decisions, and lists of registered pharmacists, pharmacies, and assistants. Names are frequently listed alphabetically and by county. Some reports contain short sketches of deceased members. A fifth annual report is not known to exist. The fourth and sixth reports were both published in 1891. Gaps in publication or holdings exist in 1900; 1917-1934; 1936; 1939; 1941-1947; 1949-1954; 1956-1957; 1959-1966; 1968-1971; and post 1972. Funds to underwrite the digitization of these reports, Board of Pharmacy Examination questions (Item # 214023), and the Board of Pharmacy Rules and Regulations (Item #214924) were provided by the Jere Matchett Memorial Fund. This donation also funded the scanning of photographs of drug stores across Kansas to include them in Kansas Memory.
