This Cowley County fair poster advertises Professor Le Roy, a man who jumps from a balloon 4,000 feet in the air, and uses a "parachute umbrella " to come safely down to earth. The fair's dates are shown as September 2-4, in Winfield, Kansas. The exact year is not known.

Captain James Hughes took this photo of an unidentified soldier at Ehrenbreitstein, Germany's balloon and motor park when the Army of Occupation was in Germany. James C. Hughes, as part of the 35th Division, left Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and traveled to Hoboken, New Jersey, where he boarded the troop ship "Ceramic" on May 18, 1918. Hughes arrived in Liverpool, England, on June 1, 1918 and then landed at Le Havre, France, on June 9, 1918. Hughes fought in the battles of St. Michael and the Meuse-Argonne. He was at Verdun on Armistice Day, November 11, 1918. He took no photos of the actual fighting. He did take many photographs after the war as part of the Army of Occupation until he left France on July 18, 1919. The L. W. (Leslie Winfield) Halbe photo collection consists of 1500 glass plate negatives produced by Halbe during his teenage years. Halbe lived in Dorrance, Russell County, Kansas, and began taking photographs of the region with an inexpensive Sears and Roebuck camera when he was fifteen years old.

Legless Andrews of Kansas City, Missouri, writes to the Kansas Department of the Grand Army of the Republic of Topeka, Kansas, concerning free attractions to be provided at the dedication ceremony of the Soldiers' Memorial Building in Topeka, May 27, 1914. Mr. Andrews describes himself as a legless airnaut [sic] and proposes to perform three balloon ascensions and parachute leaps for fifty dollars. He claims to be the only legless acrobat conducting such performances. This letter is significant for its documentation of the social history of disabled persons in the early twentieth century.

Free coffee provided by the Mokaska Coffee Company. The poster includes color illustrations of livestock, produce, and sulky racing. Also includes a circular of the Solomon Valley Fair Circuit with events in Smith Centre, Osborne, Kirwin, Phillipsburg, Norton, and Cawker City. F. J. Pattee is the fair secretary. NOTE: He is listed as F. J. Patter on the other 1886 Smith County fair poster.
