Forbes Hardware. Also visible are pedestrians, street lights, utility poles and power lines, and automobiles parked on the street.

These numerous photographs show flooding and flood damage from the Neosho River in Allen County, Kansas. High water marks can be seen on many buildings, as well as debris and destruction left by the water. Many homes, businesses, and public buildings were affected. These photographs were part of a preliminary survey by the Flood Control Committee of the Iola Chamber of Commerce on August 10, 1951. Many of the photos have additional information on their backs.

Wright Drugs, Stationery, Perfumes, Holiday articles." Other businesses listed include a bank, hardware stores, grocery stores, general merchandise stores, a church, livery barns, a contractor, a barber shop, lumber yards, a law office, a hotel, a meat market, and a blacksmith.

This photograph shows a view of the businesses on Godfrey's Block, on the west side of Washington Avenue between Lincoln and 4th streets, in Wellington, Kansas. The other business signs visible are Nuening and Hiddessen Furniture and Coffins; Staple and Fancy Dry Goods, Boots, Shoes, Notions, etcetera; and Godfrey's Block. These photographs show the Carl Engel Drug, Grocery, and Hardware Store located in the 200 block of Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan, Kansas. The first photograph shows an interior view of the drug and grocery store. There are several men and women standing in the store, and display cases and shelves full of items for sale are also visible. The second photograph shows an interior view of the Engel Hardware Store. There are three men standing in the store, and visible hardware items include metal pots, kettles, cans, a display case full of scissors, brooms, and many other items. The third photograph shows an interior view of the drug and grocery store. There are three men and a woman standing in the store, and display cases and shelves full of items for sale are also visible. There is also a large potted plant visible on the left side of the picture. The fourth photograph is an exterior view of the Carl Engel Drug Store during the 1903 flood. Several men are visible standing on what appear to be rafts on the water in front of the store. One man is seen standing in the water with the water nearly up to his waist. The top of the building shows a construction date of 1885.

Coal pick from the Blue Rapids Lumber Company. The sides of the pick head are embossed with the company's name and phone number. The Blue Rapids Lumber Company was founded in July of 1903 and closed in October of 1936.

Businesses visible in the picture include Jones Hardware, Foodtown Super Market, Western Auto Associate Store, Pabst Billiards, The Palace Clothing Company, Winter Furniture, Newman's Department Store, Citizens National Bank, J. C. Penney, the Mitway Hotel, Ireland's Shoe Shop, V. D. Milner Insurance, Diltz Service, Towner Home and Auto Supply, Roberts Luggage and Shoe Repairing, and the Good Eats Café. Many automobiles are visible along the street.

Conrad Mueller, an early Alma businessman, owned Mueller Hardware at 304 Missouri Street in Alma, Kansas, as well as the building next door in which he operated a saloon and pool hall in the late 1800s. This photo shows the east side of the 300 block of Missouri Street. The streets are dirt and several horse-drawn buggies are hitched to posts. A pile of stone lays in front of one of the stores at the far right. Several people are walking on the sidewalk. A real estate sign appears to the left and one of the awnings says "Geo. Sutherland."

This photograph shows an exterior view of Dick Brothers Drug Store located at 847 Massachusetts Street in Lawrence, Kansas. The sign painted on the side of the building shows the traditional mortar and pestle pharmacy symbol. Other signs advertise paints and oils, Chancellor cigars, toilet articles, and soda. The building behind the drug store appears to be the YMCA. (The original negative of this photograph was damaged, causing the loss of the image on the bottom of the photograph.)

Thirteen stereographs and one postcard showing exterior and interior views of the Albert A. Doerr Mercantile Company located in Larned, Kansas. The Doeerr's Big Store was a combination general/department store selling furniture, hardware, clothing and bedding, buggies, harnesses, and farm implements. It even had an undertaking department with caskets.

Dr. H. C. Perdue's Neosho County Advertiser, Erie, Kansas
Date: Between 1887 and 1889
This pamphlet titled The Neosho County Advertiser was published by Dr. H. C. Perdue, M. D., in Erie, Kansas. It contains approximately 50 pages of descriptions of medical cures and other advertising. Descriptions of Dr. Perdue's Ague Cure and other medical treatments are on pages 2-28, and other advertisements are on pages 29-49, plus the inside and outside of the back cover. Besides information on Dr. Perdue's medical practice, there are numerous advertisements for drug stores. Drug stores listed in the advertisements (and their town locations, all in Kansas) include: Palace Drug Store, Erie; Ira Steinberger Drug Store, Erie; New City Drug Store, Erie; Dr. C. E. Steadman, Druggist, Osage Mission; I. N. Wherrett General Merchandise and Drugs, Vietsburg; M. Devine, Druggist, Osage Mission; Baldwin House Drug Store, Thayer; W. R. Kramer, Druggist, Chanute; John McCarthy, Druggist, Galesburg; and Mrs. Samuel Whelpley, Druggist, Morehead. Druggists listed as references for Dr. Perdue include Charles H. Eaton and J. T. Brown, both of Erie. Other businesses and professions advertised include attorneys, real estate agents, merchants, banks, doctors, clothing stores, millinery and dress making stores, grocery stores, jewelry stores, candy stores, cigar stores, meat markets, bakeries, livery stables, abstracters, tree nurseries, buggy harness stores, carpenters, hardware stores, fur dealers, barber shops, lumber companies, monument dealers, dry goods, dentists, hotels, and furniture stores.

Drug Store and businesses on Main Street, Russell, Kansas

This photograph shows a view of the businesses along Main Street between 7th and 8th Streets in Russell, Kansas. At the left side of the picture a drug store is visible. Other businesses visible include Butler Brothers Jewelers, a bakery with a sign for ice cream, Ahsing Laundry, W. E. Banks Hardware, Land Office of K. W. Robbins, a law office, a bank, and the Spot Cash Store grocery. Most of the buildings on this block later burned in 1889, except for the ones on the far left end of the block. A few boys are visible standing in front of the businesses, and a few horses are visible in the street. Several wooden crates and a wooden barrel are visible in front of the Spot Cash Store, and a large clock hanging from a pole is visible in front of the Butler Brothers Jewelers store. (The W. E. Banks building and the First National Bank building were rebuilt after the fire, and in 2006 they were nominated for the National Register of Historic Places as virtually unaltered examples of Victorian-era commercial buildings.)

This photograph shows an exterior view of a drug store in Valley Center, Kansas. Besides the large signs advertising "Drugs," there are several other advertising signs. The sign to the right of the corner door reads, "Drugs, books, paints, oils, and glass. Wall paper. Prescriptions a specialty." Another sign advertises Keen Cigars, while another reads, "Agency, Hammar Paint, Guaranteed 5 years." There is a sign advertising "Faust," and a price of five cents. Visible outside of the store are a horse and buggy, and telephone poles. The item served as a new year's greeting to customers.

These photographs show four drug stores on Main Street in Ottawa, Kansas. The first photograph shows two drug stores right next to each other: C. L. Cowdery's Drug Store on the left, and the J. E. Youngberg Drug Company in the middle. An ice cream and soda shop is on the right. The second photograph shows the C. L. Becker Drug Store in the building second from the right. Other businesses visible include the C. B. Jones Shoe Store on the right, and the Dress Cutting Academy and The Up to Date store to the left of the drug store. The third photograph shows the S. H. Lucas Drug Store in the third building from the left. Other businesses visible on the block include The Racket; Mitchell Wagons; Topping Hardware Company; Davenport, Lathrop and Company; and J. D. Chamberlain Groceries, Bakery, and Feed. Several people are visible in front of the stores, and several horse-drawn buggies and carriages are visible on the street.
