Photographs and postcards of the mining camp, businesses, community interests, residents, and buildings in Arma, Kansas. The city of Arma was incorporated in 1909 and is located in Crawford County about nine miles north of Pittsburg. Previously the area was known as Rust, a small coal camp laid out in 1886. The town was inhabited by miners from many of the surrounding mines. Arma continues today and is home to a few businesses, a grade school and a high school.

Beecher Bible and Rifle Church, Wabaunsee County, Kansas
Date: Between 1862 and 1880
The Beecher Bible and Rifle Church is the oldest community building in the Wabaunsee County. After two years of fundraising, construction began on a stone church that still stands today in Wabaunsee. The stone was hauled from nearby hilltop quarries. Women helped mix the mortar by hand, and the original shake shingles were made with crude hand tools. The church was dedicated in May 1862.

The Cottonwood River and Spring Creek run near the community. A subtitle indicates that Cottonwood Falls is one mile from the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. The lithograph was drawn by D. This colored bird's eye view of Kingman, Kansas, was drawn by Augustus Koch of Kansas City, Missouri. It shows the court house, two schools, a hotel, and the Methodist Episcopal Church. The street names are on the image and the location of the business district is very obvious. Individual houses are also visible. There is a windmill at the corner of Main and Avenue A. The south fork of the Ninnescah River runs through Kingman.

This colored lithograph is a bird's eye view of Kinsley, Kansas, the county seat of Edwards County, Kansas. The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad ran through the town. This lithograph was done in 1878, fairly early in the town's history. The streets are named but the structures are not identified. The business district is shown as well as at least one church and some homes. There is a herd of cattle in the lower right corner of the image. The Arkansas River is in the upper left corner of the the drawing. The lithograph was drawn by D. D. Morse and published by Lott & Zeuch Lithograph, Chicago, Illinois

This colored lithograph presents a bird's eye view of Lawrence, Kansas. The Kansas River runs through the fore ground of the image. Street names are easily visible. The lithograph has two legends. The one on the left is titled "The New" and the one on the right is "The Old." The "new" legend identifies churches, businesses, manufacturing,railroad depots, schools, and "Kansas State University," which is actually the University of Kansas. The "old" legend includes the first house in Lawrence and homes of early settlers, structures related to the New England Emigrant Aid Society, newspapers, hotels, churches, and other early structures. An inset in the lower right corner depicts Lawrence in 1855. Bismarck Grove, a park and fair ground, is in the lower left insert on the image. The bird's eye view was drawn by D. D. Morse and published by Wm. Zeuch & Co., Chicago, Illinois.

The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad ran through the town. The inset in the middle bottom depicts the Peabody Library. There is a race track in the upper left area of the lithograph. It was drawn by D. D. Morse in 1878 and published by Lott & Zeuch Lithograph, Chicago, Illinois.

Birds-eye view of Tribune, Greeley County, Kansas. The car in this photograph is parked in front of a building built by George Long Reid in 1909 for his law practice. Born on Long Island in 1864, Reid came to Kansas in 1880. He was a member of the Kansas House of Representatives in 1899, 1901 and 1937 for districts 115 and 112. Later used for other purposes, the building still stands in Tribune today.

Philip Meyer took a series of photographs showing residents of the Blue River Valley as they prepared to move from their homes and farms as part of the Tuttle Creek reservoir and dam relocation project in Pottawatomie County, Kansas. He captioned this photograph "a valley prayer asks for divine guidance 'in these days when the continued existence of our place of worship, our homes and this valley are threatened.'" This is probably Mahridal Lutheran Church, organized in 1863. This interior view shows the altar, the pulpit, a pipe organ and organist, and the congregation.
