Here are several photographs and postcards of Columbus, Kansas. Columbus is the county seat of Cherokee County and the commercial center for the area. Being a railroad junction, shipping was an important part of its value to the early mining era. Columbus was founded in 1868 and its first post office was opened in 1869. Images include schools, churches, street scenes, the courthouse, the electric light plant, and parks.

This black and white photograph shows a view of a sticker promoting the largest municipal swimming pool in the United States in Garden City, Kansas.

The photograph shows what is believed to be the acceptance test of Garden City, Finney County, Kansas' new 500 gallon pumper purchased in 1927. It is being tested at the city's huge swimming pool in the winter. The truck was in service until 1962, when it was retired and replaced by a new 1,000 gallon pumper. Also visible in the background of the photograph is the old diving board.

This postcard shows the swimming pool at Gage Park in Topeka, Kansas. At the time this postcard was published, this was one of the largest of all concrete pools in the Midwest. It was 460 feet long, 65 to 170 feet wide, and had an electric fountain, slides, chutes and a sand beach.

These are panoramic photographs of locations in Kansas created by the Kansas Film Commission to promote scenes to film companies. The panoramics were created by taking individual photos and taping them together. The photographs are arranged alphabetically by subject and then location. Subjects included in this part of the collection are old west towns, parks, people, and prairie.

The excavation for the pool began in 1963 and the pool was finished in 1965. It was used by patients, staff, and students of the Menninger Foundation.

This photograph shows young men diving from a platform at the Cahan Swimming Pool about half a mile west of Marysville in Marshall County, Kansas. Cahan's was a very popular place and included a dance hall in later years. Also visible are people in the pool, spectators, and parked automobiles in the background.
