These numerous photographs show flooding and flood damage from the Neosho River in Allen County, Kansas. High water marks can be seen on many buildings, as well as debris and destruction left by the water. Many homes, businesses, and public buildings were affected. These photographs were part of a preliminary survey by the Flood Control Committee of the Iola Chamber of Commerce on August 10, 1951. Many of the photos have additional information on their backs.

An early advertisement for barbed wire fencing "Victorious and triumphant! Haish's improved S barb and Stevens' lock stitch steel fence wire." The advent of barbed wire as material for fencing dramatically changed ranching and land use in the American West by ending the open range system that had prevailed previously.

Farmers had to shovel dust from implements and uncover food for livestock. The dust began to blow in 1933 and for four years western Kansas was a part of the "dust bowl". On March 15, 1935, referred to as "black Friday," a tremendous dust storm hit western Kansas.
