August "Gus" Bogina Jr.

August "Gus" Bogina is a former member of both the Kansas House of Representatives and the Kansas Senate. Mr. Bogina, originally from Shawnee, Kansas, and now retired, worked as a consulting engineer during his career. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in engineering. He was first elected to the Kansas House of Representatives in 1974 and reelected to two additional terms, serving from 1975 through 1980; in 1980, he was elected to the Kansas Senate and reelected to four additional terms. He served as chair of the Senate Ways and Means Committee for eleven sessions, 1985 through 1995.

An interview with Donna Whiteman, a former majority leader of the Kansas House of Representatives. She was appointed to a vacant seat in the Kansas House of Representatives in 1983, first elected to the House in 1984 and reelected to three additional terms, serving from 1983 through 1991. She served as assistant minority leader in the House in the 1989 and 1990 legislative sessions and as majority leader in the 1991 legislative session. She resigned from the legislature in August of 1991 to accept an appointment as secretary of the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services and served in that position through early 1995. The interview was conducted by Professor Ed. Flentje and this interview is one in a series completed in partnership with the Kansas Oral History Project, Inc., and funding from the Kansas Humanities Council. The goal of the project is collecting, transcribing, and making available to researchers and the public, oral histories of various aspects of life in Kansas, particularly public policymaking.
