This item contains the details of land surveys conducted by John C. McCoy on Cherokee Lands in 1836 and 1837. McCoy's field notes contains details such as the types of trees, topography, size and course of streams, soil condition, etc. According to the first entry, McCoy began the survey "in accordance with the instructions of Isaac McCoy" and "commenced at the N.W. corner of Quapau Lands on the East bank of the Neosho. River and run thence up with the meanders of the same."

In this letter to Mr. Elliott of Coffeyville, Kansas State Historical Society Curator of Archives George A. Root provides some brief information regarding Samuel Irvin. Root explains that Irvin "arrived in Kansas in 1837, and established at Highland a mission for the Iowa and Sac Indians. He is described as a man of slight build, and absolutely fearless."

Isaac McCoy kept a journal from 1814 to 1841. This is the fifteenth part of the journal, covering part of 1837. Isaac McCoy was ordained a Baptist minister in 1810 and served as missionary among the Native Americans in present-day Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Kansas. He was an advocate of Indian removal from the eastern United States, proposing an Indian state in what is now Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma so Native Americans could be free from the "corrupting influences attending association with the frontier people of that early period." Isaac McCoy was a key part in the work of the Board of Foreign Missions in America and the Committee on Indian Affairs on the issues of Native American emigration and the Indian Removal Act.

This manuscript lists the names of American Indian people who were identified as having partial Omaha ancestry and who were born before 1830. This document is part of the Isaac McCoy collection. A Christian missionary, McCoy lobbied Washington officials in the 1820s for the removal of Indian tribes east of the Mississippi to unoccupied areas in the West. By the 1830s McCoy worked for the United States government, selecting and surveying locations for the immigrant Indians and establishing and maintaining missions and schools.

This is a letterbook of correspondence received by the Office of Indian Affairs in St. Louis, Missouri from July 6, 1837, through May 12, 1839. The majority of the letters were from the Commissioner of Indian Affairs regarding the authorization of contracts, monetary allowances, and personnel nominations. An entry on September 2, 1838, acknowledges the receipt of a letter informing of the death of William Clark, who had served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs in the central district until his death.

This volume of received correspondence from the Central Indian Superintendency at St. Louis, Missouri, includes holograph copies of letters received primarily from agents providing information about agency operations and contacts with various Indian nations, requests, and answers to questions of the Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Included in the correspondence are reports of Indian warfare and murders, alcohol abuse, conflicts between employees, the treaty with and emigration of the Potawatomi, supply requisitions, and smallpox.
