This letter is from C.B. Schmidt, foreign agent for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad to Colonel A.S. Johnson, Acting Land Commission for the Santa Fe Railroad. Schmidt writes about the prospect of foreign immigration coming to the United States in the near future, mostly focusing on the number of Mennonites and other Russo-Germans expected to immigrate. Page 7 of the letter contains a statement of land sales to "Foreigners from the U.S. and Canada" and "Foreigners from Europe Direct. It covers the time period February 15, 1873, through May 30, 1877. Sales are grouped by Germans, Austrians, Scandinavians, French, Russo-Germans, Dutch, and Swiss. It shows the number of acres and the amount of income by group.

Governor Thomas Osborn immigration received correspondence

Governor Thomas Osborn compiled this series of correspondence on immigration issues from letters received while in office from 1873-1877. The letters address many aspects of immigration including the appointment of commissioners; immigration promotion; foreign immigration from Scotland, France, Wales, Europe in general, the Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark), and Germany. Domestic immigration is also addressed concerning immigrants from New England, Louisiana, and Tennessee (early Exodusters); and Indian lands.

Louis Vieux
Date: 1880s or 1890s
This is a studio portrait of Louis Vieux. Of Potawatomi Indian and French ancestry, Louis Vieux was an early resident of area that became Pottawatomie County in 1847 or 1848. Probably born near Lake Michigan, Vieux, with a portion of the Potawatomi, moved to Iowa and later Indianola, Kansas, near Topeka. The Vieux family, with its seven children, lived in a log cabin on the Oregon Trail near the Vermillion river crossing. Vieux built and operated a toll bridge over the river.

Map of Etienne Veniard de Bourgmont's expedition route through central Kansas

This is a map showing Etienne Veniard de Bourgmont's expedition to central Kansas to make peace with the Indians and establish a trade route to New Mexico. Etienne's route can be traced from Fort Orleans, a post he established in present Carroll County, Missouri, to the Grand Village of the Padoucas in central Kansas, the exact location of which has not been determined. The Diamond of the Prairie and the Lost Springs, where Bourgmont paused, for years refreshed travelers along the old Santa Fe Trail. Other Kansas landmarks identified by author Milton Reichart include crossing near present-day Council Grove, cone-shaped peaks in the Flint Hills of Wabaunsee County and very light stones pinpointed in McPherson County. The map was adapted from a State Geological Survey of Kansas, 1964. This map appears in Milton Reichart's article Bourgmont's Route To Central Kansas: A Reexamination, and was published in Kansas History, A Journal of the Central Plains, vol. 2 No. 2, Summer, 1979.

It shows the locations of foreign settlements of Germans (including Russian Mennonites); Scandinavians; French and Italians; Irish, Welsh and Scotch; and Bohemians and Hungarians.

Green, this item contains a rather detailed look at the area that had been occupied for some time by the Delaware tribe following their move West, which was necessitated by the increasing number of white settlers on the eastern coasts of the United States.
