In this photo the family has stopped east of Phoenix, Arizona to take a picture of a cactus and the desert. Twelve year old James Renwick Hughes poses outside the car. The rest of the family can be seen inside. The family must have been on their way to the next military base, Fort Sam Houston. James Clark Hughes was born in Topeka, Kansas, in 1888, and served in the Mexican Border Conflict, World War I, and World War II. He used an autographic camera to take pictures of friends, family, and places in the United States and Europe during World War I.
