Louis Palenske photographed Canyon de Chelly, located in the Navajo Nation in northern Arizona, while on a photographic excursion through northern New Mexico and northern Arizona. The Navajo people, and before them the Hopi and the ancient Pueblo civilizations lived in the canyon for over 5,000 years. The canyon was designated as a National Monument in 1931. Funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission through the Kansas State Historical Records Advisory Board.

The Little Colorado River canyon is a very deep, narrow gorge formed by the Little Colorado River, a tributary which dumps into the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. The Little Colorado River Gorge is often called the Grand Canyon East and is located in the Navajo Nation. Louis Palenske photographed this view of the canyon with his Korona Panoramic View Camera. Funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission through the Kansas State Historical Records Advisory Board.
