Velocipede

Velocipede
Creator: Victor Overman Wheel Company
Date: 1885
"Victor" high-wheeled bicycle, or penny-farthing, made by the Overman Wheel Company of Boston, Massachusetts, around 1885. The design of this bicycle gained popularity after riders found that they could move faster and cover more ground with one revolution of the pedals using a larger front wheel. The wheel also traveled more smoothly over rough roads and cobblestone streets. It did come with the risk of headers - falling over the handle bars due to the bicycle being front heavy. Eventually the invention of the chain drive and pneumatic bicycle tires resulted in the end of high-wheel bicycles.
