Three Cent Postal Stamp from the Last Chance Store, 14MO367
Date: 1870-1883
This fragment of a three cent U. S. Postal stamp was discovered during the archeological monitoring at the Last Chance Store in Council Grove in 2016. The delicate fragment was recovered from under the floor boards and shows George Washington's profile and the lettering "U. S. PO." This type of stamp was engraved and printed in large quantitys and was modeled on a bust of George Washington by Jean Antoine Houdon. The Last Chance Store was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
