This unusually thick mirror is derived from a larger glass pane that was smashed by Carry A. Nation, a nationally recognized temperance advocate. Nation, a resident of Medicine Lodge, Kansas, achieved infamy for smashing saloon windows with a hatchet to discourage drinking. She was frequently jailed for her vandalism. A Topeka, Kansas, resident probably acquired this fragment in 1901, as Nation embarked on a highly publicized temperance-related crusade through that city. During her trip, Nation used hatchets to smash the glass of multiple saloons. The resident later installed the glass in a frame and gave it to his daughter. The fragment is thicker than mirrored glass of the period, apparently validating its original use as a saloon window.
