A 12-gauge muzzle loading shotgun, with the engraved plate, "Gun of Captain Sam Walker, Brought to Kansas in June 1854" attached to the stock. Samuel Walker came to Kansas to support the free-state cause. Advised by the proslavery sheriff of Douglas County to leave the territory, he responded by organizing a company of free-state militia known as the Bloomington guards. Walker was at several conflicts between the free-staters and proslavery men, including Lawrence, Fort Saunders and Fort Titus. Presumably the shotgun went with him.
