William Tecumseh Sherman was a partner, with his brother-in-law, Thomas Ewing, Jr, in a law firm in Leavenworth, Kansas Territory, from approximately 1857-1859. While there, he was involved in promoting the interests of Leavenworth. Sherman later gained fame as a Union general in the Civil War (1861-1865).
