Hiram Jackson Strickler was best known for serving as the Commissioner to Audit Claims of Citizens of the Territory of Kansas about damages they had suffered in various confrontations. Although no money was ever received by the claimants, Strickler's report contains testimonials from both pro slavery and antislavery settlers about armed confrontations, damages, and details about items and homes destroyed during these conflicts. He also served as Adjutant General of Kansas Territory.
