A painting of the Free State Hotel, Lawrence, Kansas Territory, by Robert O. Gibbons. In May 1856, the proslavery sheriff of Douglas County, Samuel Jones, led a posse into Lawrence, the major Free-State stronghold. The chief damage was the burning of the Free State Hotel as shown in this painting.
