James H. Noteware, superintendent of schools for Kansas Territory, wrote from Leavenworth, Kansas Territory, to Governor James W. Denver seeking the governor's support for Noteware's effort to establish a school system in the Kansas Territory. Noteware mentions that some settlers are having difficulty with regard to setting up schools because the land upon which they settled legally belonged to Native Americans who had been given the land by the U.S. Government following the passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1831.
