Portrait of Thomas J. Smith as a young man. Hired as the chief of police in Abilene, Kansas in 1870, Chief Smith, who was by then an experienced and well-respected lawman, was killed in a dugout cave northeast of Abilene while trying to arrest murder suspect Andrew McConnell.
