John Pipher, President of the Board of Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Manhattan, Kansas Territory, wrote Isaac Goodnow to state the church would not be ready for dedication until April 8, 1860, and to ask that Goodnow "send a good man by that time." Pipher referred to the debts held by the church, and asked how much Goodnow could contribute to their repayment. [Note: Goodnow had spent time over the previous several years traveling in New England, raising money for construction of both the church and Bluemont Central College.]
