This photograph shows the self propelled icing machine for refrigerated cars is at the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railway Company yard, in San Bernardino, CA. Notice the blocks of ice being loaded into the machine via conveyor belt. The machine can grind 6 tons of ice in 90 seconds and pour it into the bunker of a refrigerated car (also called a Reefer). These cars were used to ship California citrus products across the U.S. The cars being filled are labeled SFRD (Santa Fe Refrigerator Dispatch). The number of the car in the foreground is 15101.
